The Maury vintage 1939 vinified exclusively from the Grenache grape variety that characterizes the area Pla del Fount. The vineyards grow on soil containing Aptian shales mostly not decomposed.Very traditional, the winemaking process is based on the fortification, an old technique dating back to 1258. With this technique, some of the glucose grape has not undergone processing, and the wine is "naturally" sweet, typical character of fortified wines.Located thirty kilometers from Perpignan, the area Pla del Fount was born in the mid-19th century under the initiative of Desire Esteve known as Pepe Desire. His descendants took over for the direction of the field and present, Agnes Volontat is in the head. The vineyards grow on land with soils with metamorphic character.Maury domain Pla del Fount is a Vin Doux Naturel produced from the Grenache.
This 1939 Maury is very deep in color. The nose is very intense, almost overpowering with mulberry, sloes, dark cherries and yellow plum. It is very youthful but does not quite have the finesse of other Maury wines. The palate is medium-bodied with a hint of Szechuan pepper on the entry. I like the structure here - heady and powerful, broody with thickly layered marmalade and dark plum on the finish that retains fine tension, if not quite the persistency I was expecting. Tasted December 2012.
